Artist's Description
"Family Portrait" is a deeply personal and expressive piece. I used Mod Podge, dried paint, ink, and iridescent spray paint.
Even though the painting is busy with lots of colors, each piece feels alone, just like I did. Some parts of the painting have dark spots where the ink spread into the dried paint. These dark spots show the sadness and feeling of being a failure that I experienced at a family gathering.
The artwork showcases blues, oranges, reds, greens, and purples, with shimmering effects from the iridescent spray paint. The layered pieces of dried paint create a sense of fragmentation, symbolizing feelings of being broken and disconnected. Dark patches where the ink has bled into the paint add depth and convey the overwhelming emotions of isolation and despair.

About Megan Hale

Megan Hale is a 36-year-old artist living in Peoria, Illinois. A dual citizen of Canada and the U.S., she lives with her life partner and has a deep love for film, especially horror. "For me, painting is therapy. It's way to process my trauma, recovery, fear, hope, shame, anger, and joy. My art evolves as I heal, and I heal as I create. Sometimes, it feels like breaking through a black-painted window into a world of broken glass. It still cuts, but I'm free. The wounds are healing. I paint to stay grounded, to give my emotions a voice. When I paints, I hears color and see sound. It’s overwhelming and beautiful. A way to feel and process everything at once.
